Redmond Councilmember Kim Allen speaks on the environment
October 17th, 2009 at 1:44 pm by kimallenAs your councilmember, I have been a vocal champion of tree preservation and sustainability in Redmond. I helped craft the last Comprehensive Plan and Transportation Management Plan, both of which set ambitious goals for growth in Redmond while protecting the natural environment and moving toward transit oriented urban centers. I also work hard to make sure that Redmond is one of the leaders in adopting its critical areas and shoreline regulations.
As an elected official, I have endorsed the Wild Sky and Alpine Lakes Wilderness Addition, as well as the Roadless Rule Resolution. I also support Redmond’s partnership with the Cascade Land Conservancy to restore acres of our urban forest to health.
We are now beginning work on a Green Sustainability Initiative for the city to celebrate Redmond’s upcoming centennial. It will involve ambitious goals for energy conservation and carbon reduction, waste management and resource conservation, sustainable development and green infrastructure, and ecosystem conservation and stewardship. One thing I learned from the new Budgeting By Priorities process is that if you don’t measure progress with goals and metrics, you generally don’t get any progress. This initiative holds us accountable to deliver a sustainable city to our children and I want to spend my next term in office keeping the momentum on this critical work.
Hello Redmond! Here’s why I’m running for re-election.
October 2nd, 2009 at 9:53 am by kimallenRedmond needs experienced leadership to take on the tough challenges of increasing mobility, carefully managing our growth, and becoming a sustainable city where our kids can afford to live someday. I helped to shape the Comprehensive Plan that is unfolding now in downtown. As we grow, I bring a deep understanding of where we have been and where we want to be, with experience advocating locally and on the regional stage. I have served as a regional voice for Redmond under two mayors in transportation, growth management and public safety.
As your Councilmember, I’ve been asking the questions you want answered and leading Redmond’s interests on growth management and transportation. I represent Redmond as a voting member of Eastside Transportation Partnership, working to bring us more busses and light rail. I serve on the King County Growth Management Council, providing Redmond a voice at the table as the county determines where growth will be concentrated so we can plan for where our share will go. I’m serving as Council’s lead in rewriting Redmond’s zoning code so you’ll know exactly how new growth will look and so you don’t have to be a city planner to remodel your own home. I want City Hall to be open and accessible when you come to get things done. There is much we can do to make permits and licenses and payments an online event that you can choose on your timetable. I believe the neighbors who live here should be the architects of Redmond’s future.
I’m working to make Redmond more sustainable so our kids can afford to live here. We need to stay focused, build smarter and grow thoughtfully. Protecting our trees and community character makes Redmond a quality home for everyone. Let’s keep the momentum on what matters to you!
Please give me your vote on November 3rd and remember to mail in your ballot!
