Redmond people and businesses have a strong showing in the “Best of Western Washington” contest being sponsored by KING 5’s “Evening Magazine” show.
Voting goes through Oct. 12 and winners will be announced on Oct. 24. New nominees and contest standings are constantly being added/updated.
Here’s just a sampling of the Redmond businesses in the running, so far:
BEST WINERY: Northwest Totem Cellars and Betz Family Winery.
BEST FUN PLACE FOR KIDS: Great Play, Orange Blossom Society, South 47 Farm. (Note: South 47 Farm is technically no longer open to the public, but a portion of the property there, known as Dr. Maze’s Farm, will be open throughout the fall with a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin patch and so on.)
BEST LOCAL BANDS: @five, Big Dog Revue, Bramble Brothers, Sealth, Seven Mile Ride. (Also, Bleu Sturgeon, which is listed as a Woodinville band, actually has a Redmond tie, too. Band leader Neil Sturgeon is an executive at Redmond-based Ally Marketing.)
BEST ANIMAL TRAINING: Blue Dog Pet Training and Sitting, Canine Behavior Center.
BEST BARBECUE: Carolina Kitchen (Alas, this business is closed but in its former location, there’s a new restaurant/deli called Pacific Coast Bakery, currently featured on the Redmond Reporter Web site.)
BEST MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS: Mills Music, Pacific Music.
BEST GYM: Crossfit Training, Redmond Athletic Club, The Bar Method.
Again, this is just a sampling of many Redmond businesses, nominated in many different categories for “Best of Western Washington” honors.
It’s up to you to choose your favorites but please do show support for the local folks who are working hard to make Redmond a great place to live, work and play.
Much more information is available at:

While recently chatting with Mary Kellison, pastoral assistant and director of adult faith formation programs at St. Jude Catholic Church in Redmond, I asked her how their unique Special Needs Mass program was doing.
It’s still going strong, she said. The “All God’s Children” services, designed for people with special needs, their families, friends and caregivers, take place on the second Saturday of every month except for January and April. People of all faiths — not just Catholics – attend the worship services which are especially accommodating to individuals with developmental disabilities such as autism and sensory integration disorders.
A light lunch reception follows each of the services, at which time there is a craft activity and opportunities for parents and caregivers to network.
Kellison noted that she was sad to hear of the recent closure of the Redmond Top Food store, because staff there had been kind enough to host some fundraisers for the church’s special needs outreach programs. Individuals or businesses wishing to offer donations or assistance, so that more people with special needs and their families can be included at St. Jude, can contact Mary Kellison at (425) 883-7685 or visit www.st.jude-redmond.org/.

Teresa Osborn, a dance instructor for the City of Redmond’s Parks and Recreation department will offer lessons in September for those who want to learn Michael Jackson’s famous “Thriller” dance and perform it with a huge crowd of fun-loving zombies of all ages at the Town Center.
The event will be a fundraiser for SecondStory Repertory, the professional theatre company at Redmond Town Center, which features performing arts education for kids and teens, including a summer production of “Grease” that we’ll soon be covering in the Redmond Reporter.
For now, kick back, relax and watch this zany YouTube video with highlights from last year’s “Thrill the World” event in Redmond and info about the new event:

As a professional journalist, I am not often at a loss for words, but it’s hard to adequately describe last night’s phenomenal dress rehearsal for Cirque du Soleil’s “KOOZA” show, which officially opens tonight at Marymoor Park.
The show is magical and mind-blowing from start to finish. There truly is something from everyone to enjoy: terrific music and comedy, dazzling costumes and sensational demonstrations of everything from grace and subtlety to strength, agility and sheer dauntlessness.
During recent interviews with “KOOZA’s” artistic director, Adam Miller and Mike Tyus, who plays The Trickster, both expressed amazement at the range of talent within the cast — and last night, seeing was believing.
It would be difficult to pick a favorite act in “KOOZA.” The show includes contortionists, a flying trapeze artist, a high-wire act and much more. But I’d have to say my favorite was the “Wheel of Death.” Unbelievable. Enough said.
Besides bringing great entertainment to Redmond, Cirque du Soleil’s presence is a real boon for business and tourism in the city. The Cirque performers stay here at Redmond hotels and many Cirque fans from out-of-town stay, eat and/or shop locally, too.
If you possibly can, go to “KOOZA,” cheer loudly and let Cirque du Soleil know Redmond wants them back, again and again.

But when those sunbreaks happen, it’s great to be out in the fresh air, perhaps sharing a drink or a bite to eat with friends. Maybe it’ll happen this weekend. Here are a few of Redmond’s al fresco dining destinations to keep in mind.
• Black Raven Brewing Company, 14679 NE 95th St., will now offer to the 21 and over crowd — and as weather permits — a Saturday beer garden with sales of grilled brats and Andouille sausage. Food from nearby Flying Saucer Pizza can also be ordered and delivered to Black Raven.
For more information about Black Raven, call (425) 881-3020 or visit www.blackravenbrewing.com.
• Also for those 21 or over, The Matador, 7824 Leary Way NE has an outdoor seating section and great deals on generous portions of appetizers during both early and late Happy Hours. Call (425) 883-2855 or visit www.matadorrestaurants.com/location-redmond.html
• Spazzo on the upper level of Redmond Town Center has outdoor seating and Happy Hours, as well. Call (425) 881-4400 or visit www.schwartzbros. com/spazzo.cfm.
• Ruby’s on the lower level of Redmond Town Center has some tables outdoors and is a big hit with the kids. Call (425) 861-7829 or visit http://www.rubys.com/2-locations/locations.aspx

Redmond is chock-full of interesting residents, workers and visitors so there’s always plenty going on.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting Queen Rania of Jordan at a reception on the Microsoft campus. Just a few minutes ago, I did a phone interview with Adam Miller, the artistic director of Cirque du Soleil’s “KOOZA,” which is headed to a run at King County’s Marymoor Park in Redmond.
Watch for coverage of “KOOZA” here at www.redmond-reporter.com and in our print editions which publish on Fridays.
But on a more local level, I’m also working on stories about Redmond High School students competing in a game design contest, Entrepreneurship students from RHS, the 20th anniversary of the Redmond Senior Center, a huge Indian cultural festival that will bring dazzling entertainment to the Redmond City Hall campus, SecondStory Repertory’s upcoming season … and much, much more.

I’m working on a story about some Redmond nurseries which have been named among The Green Gardening Program’s recommended 2010 Natural Yard Care Nurseries. These are nurseries that offer safe, environmentally friendly lawn and garden products as well as workshops on how to grow edible plants.
If you love tomatoes as much as I do — meaning good tomatoes, not the “cardboard” kind you get at most supermarkets — you might want to check out the “Tomato-Tastic Weekend” festivities at Pacific Topsoils’ Gray Barn Nursery and Garden Center, 20871 NE Redmond-Fall City Rd. (the corner of 208th and Sahalee Way).
Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2, gardening experts will be on hand to answer all your questions about growing tomatoes, from the big Beefsteak to the petite Cherry.
Kids will be able to create an artistic print using fruits and vegetables and to plant a tomato start to grow at home.
For more information, call (425) 898-8265 or visit www.graybarn.com

The society holds regular presentations at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center (ORSCC), 16600 NE 80th St. Those are free and open to the public. You can also visit the Redmond Historical Society’s office on the ground floor of the ORSCC. They have many volumes of historic photos and artifacts for you to study.
• WALK THROUGH REDMOND’S “OLD TOWN”
Tours of Redmond’s “old town” area are scheduled for the spring and summer seasons.
Tours are scheduled on Sundays from 1-2:30 p.m. on the following dates: April 18, May 16, June 20 and Sept. 19, unless it rains on those dates.
There is an $8 fee to cover research costs and tours begin at the steps of the Justice White house at 7730 Leary Way.
Tour leader Tom Hitzroth will walk you through Redmond’s oldest business district and will tell you spicy stores about Redmond’s randy pioneer days.
• STITCH YOURSELF INTO THE THREADS OF REDMOND’S HISTORY
Redmond Historical Society member Joanne Westlund is collecting 100 quilt squares to be made into a special quilt to commemorate the City of Redmond’s centennial celebration.
If you have a favorite Redmond image, such as a historic building or your old home, consider turning it into a quilt square.
The names of those who contribute squares will be stitched into the quilt’s border.
For more information, call (425) 898-0399 or e-mail Joanne Westlund at jmwestlund@verizon.net.

Pushing Boundaries is the only place in Washington state where people with paralysis — due to spinal cord injuries or neurological disorders — can receive intensive exercise therapies to help them gain mobility. The activities also prevent serious complications that can stem from inactivity, such as weight gain, heart disease, diabetes and depression.
The dedicated staff at this amazing non-profit organization hosts regular tours so that you can see what they do and how much of an impact it has on people with paralysis and their families.
Pushing Boundaries will host its second annual “Success Beyond Paralysis Fundraising Luncheon” at noon Thursday, April 29 at the Marriott at Redmond Town Center. There is no cost to attend the event but guests are encouraged to make donations that will dramatically change lives.
To learn more about Pushing Boundaries and the fundraising event, call Shawna Hanson at (425) 869-9506 or e-mail shawna@pushing-boundaries.org.

The Redmond Saturday Market is unarguably one of the city’s top attractions, both for local folks and others passing through — perhaps staying at the nearby Marriott properties or the new Hotel Sierra at Riverpark.
Held each Saturday, May through October, at Leary Way and Bear Creek Parkway, the Redmond Saturday Market features produce, specialty food items and arts/crafts, all grown or created in the state of Washington, along with free entertainment and great people-watching.
This year, the market celebrates its 35th anniversary with a grand opening ribbon-cutting at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 1.
A 20-piece pep band from Redmond High School will get the crowd revved up right after that ceremony.
A Redmond Fire Department truck will be on site all day, welcoming visits from kids.
KidsQuest Children’s Museum will also be there from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
From noon- 2 p.m. Joe Calhoun and the Lost River String Band will entertain on the main stage.
The Redmond Historical Society will hand out free cookies from 9 a.m.-noon.
Baby alpacas from the “Heart of Dreams” Alpacas will also make an appearance.
Lunch customers will be able to choose from pizza, tamales, crepes, kettle corn, shaved ice and baked goods.
Look for updates on the Redmond Saturday Market in the Redmond Reporter this spring and summer. In the meantime, you can sign up for a weekly electronic newsletter called The Market Thymes.

Since Redmond’s Underhill’s Furniture store closed last year, the quaint building in the heart of downtown Redmond has been dormant until recently. I wondered what was going on there, did some asking around and learned that the building will become the new location of the city’s Washington state liquor store.
I don’t know the opening date yet but do know that the Redmond Historical Society has been collaborating with the City of Redmond and Magellan Architects to incorporate some fun and educational Redmond history displays in the windows of the new store. I’ll bring you more information soon, but look for installation of the history displays to start in early March.

Once again, Cirque du Soleil will pitch its Grand Chapiteau (the distinctive blue and yellow big top tent) at King County’s Marymoor Park in Redmond, for the KOOZA production that opens on Thursday, June 3.
According to a press release, KOOZA is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil that combines the circus traditions of acrobatic performances and clowning.
“KOOZA is about human connection and the world of duality, good or bad,” said the show’s writer and director David Shiner. “The tone is fun and funny, light and open. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s very much about ideas, too.”
Watch for more information in the Redmond Reporter, about this and other entertainment events that will make this city “the place to be” this summer.

On Jan. 27, we ran a story about a Redmond “Rocketman” whose design for a Space Shuttle Program commemorative patch was one of 15 finalists in a NASA contest:
http://www.pnwlocalnews.com/east_king/red/lifestyle/82813567.html

We heard from Dave Ginsberg this week that his design placed fifth among the top 15 finalists in the NASA employees’ “People Choice” voting. And he placed sixth among the top 15 in the unofficial collectSPACE “Fans’ Choice Poll.”

Ginsberg noted, “It was an honor to have had my design considered in such high regard by so many who cast their votes.” He added, “An e-mail I received from NASA says, ‘The quality of the submissions and the emotion behind the designs shows tremendous commitment and loyalty to the Space Shuttle Program. The judges were so impressed with the quality and imagination of the designs and found the task of selecting a difficult one.”
Ginsberg concluded, “Again, my appreciation goes out to all who voted for my design and provided supportive comments and critiques.”

Have you ever shopped for a date in Redmond?
A few years back, before Valentine’s Day, I wrote a series of stories called “Looking for Love in Redmond,” which profiled a number of local folks — of different ages and different stages in their lives, some widowed, some divorced, some just getting started in the dating game — about their experiences with the dating scene in Redmond.
It was fun to write and actually went on to win Third Place for Best Comprehensive Coverage in the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association’s 2008 “Build a Better Newspaper Contest.”
One of the questions I asked some single adults was whether they’d ever “shopped for dates” while cruising the aisles at a grocery store, hardware store or other location where it wouldn’t be totally obvious that they were flirting.
In other words, when you go to a “singles bar,” it’s assumed that you are single and hoping to meet someone special. At Safeway or Whole Foods? Well, people assume you’re there to pick up dinner, while picking up a date could be an unexpected bonus.
I was reminded of the “looking for love in everyday places” concept when I spotted this story written by a colleague from the Redmond Reporter’s parent company Sound Publishing. Jenny Manning of the Whidbey News Time wrote about an Albertsons supermarket in Oak Harbor that hosted a pre-Valentine’s day event with prizes and opportunities to chat with other shoppers.
Would this idea fly in Redmond? Would you be interested if one of the local grocery stores sponsored a “Meet Market?” Which store would be your pick and why? Ideas are welcome at mdecker@redmond-reporter.com.
And here’s a link to the “Meet Market” story from our sister publication:
But I’ll soon be interviewing a few individuals who can potentially put Redmond in a national — or universal — spotlight.
Christopher Lu, an eighth grader from Redmond, has been chosen as one of seven national finalists in the MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) Junior Piano Competition. The competition takes place in Albuquerque, N.M. this spring.
Also, local artist/designer Dave Ginsberg is one of 15 finalists in a NASA contest to create a patch commemorating the end of the Space Shuttle program, scheduled to fly its last mission later this year.
As another fun tidbit, Redmond High School student Peter Castro will be a cast member in SecondStory Repertory’s upcoming production of the romantic comedy-musical “She Loves Me.”
Watch for more info about that in the Redmond Reporter, too.

Business Week magazine recently chose Redmond as 2010’s Best Place to Raise Your Kids in Washington state. Redmond’s excellent parks, trails and schools were among the reasons for the honor.
In case you didn’t know, each month, Family Circle magazine publishes a “My Hometown” feature in which a proud resident explains why his or her hometown is unique and great for families.
In the Feb. 2010 issue, the featured town is Waukesha, Wis. and a resident sings the praises of Waukesha’s historic buildings and shops, cultural festivals and parks and recreation amenities.
Wouldn’t it be fun to see Redmond spotlighted in Family Circle?
If you agree, send an e-mail explaining what you love about living in Redmond, along with a photo of your family, to hometown@familycircle.com.

Meanwhile, Everything Party at 17181 Redmond Way
http://www.everythingparty.com
offers a wide range of whimsical decorations and party favors for all those occasions — plus the Super Bowl, celebrity-ogling (watching the Golden Globes and the Oscars), President’s Day and more.
This Friday, Jan. 8, would have been Elvis Presley’s 75th birthday. There’s yet excuse to have a party.
If your business, school, church or club has a winter holiday event that is open to the community, the Redmond Reporter would love to hear from you.

Earlier this week, Hopelink public relations specialist Denise Stephens gratefully accepted a $1,000 check from the Redmond Police Department, to help brighten the holidays of community members who are facing hard times.
It’s certainly been a difficult season for the law enforcement community, too, in light of recent tragedies involving officers in the Puget Sound region. But that has not dampened the spirits of Redmond’s dedicated police force.
“We have been embraced by our citizens and this is a simply a way to let them know that we care about them,” Redmond Police Commander Shari Shovlin explained in an e-mail to the Redmond Reporter.
Shovlin noted, “Our department and its members feel very blessed this time of year and realize how lucky we are that we work for such a great department. Our department members are like family and as many families do, we exchange gifts letting each other know how much we appreciate each other. Instead of exchanging gifts this year, it was important that we let our Redmond community know how much we appreciate them — all of them. Knowing that many non-profits are in need this year, due to the economic times, our department members decided to give money to the food bank to help those that really need gifts, food and clothing.”
Kudos to the Redmond Police for their generous donation and for their positive attitude.
I will also add that when I visited Hopelink’s office twice this week, I was impressed by the number of people who were dropping off donations and the number of cheerful volunteers who were busily sorting the donations.
Christmas Day will come and go before we know it, but the need for your time, talent and gifts of food, cash — or whatever you can share with others less fortunate — will continue into the New Year.
Thanks to all who have demonstrated the true Christmas spirit through their kindness toward their neighbors — and best wishes for peace and prosperity in 2010.

In last Friday’s Redmond Reporter, our editor Bill Christianson wrote about an effort between the Reporter staff and the Redmond Rotary to identify and honor a Community MVP of the Year.
In case you missed Bill’s column, a nominee for this award should be a shining star who has generously given a large amount of volunteer time to a worthy cause in Redmond.
From my experience as a reporter in Redmond, I can tell you that this community is blessed with many wonderful and talented people who care deeply about their neighbors and making Redmond a terrific place to live, work and play.
Choosing just one exemplary volunteer won’t be easy, but that’s where you, our readers, can play an important role.
Take a moment to think about someone here in Redmond, at your office, school, church or club, who consistently and cheerfully gives back to the community in a meaningful way.
E-mail that person’s name and contact information, along with your name and contact information — and a brief paragraph explaining why the nominee is special — to redmondrotary@yahoo.com.
Nominations are due by Dec. 15 and the winner will be given an award at the Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce Awards Luncheon on Jan. 20, 2010.

You’re bored, you’re broke and your blood pressure is out of whack.
Walking is a no-nonsense, no-cost way to relieve stress, improve your health and help you to appreciate some local sights that you’re not going to see when you’re stuck in traffic or zoning out in front of the TV.
And the City of Redmond has just published two new “Walk Redmond” brochures (one for the East side of town, including Education Hill, North Redmond and the Sammamish Valley and the other for the West end, including Downtown, Grasslawn and Overlake).
These free publications include maps and facts about a variety of scenic walks, whether you’re only free for a quick jaunt or have time for a leisurely stroll.
Descriptions of each route include noteworthy landmarks or natural features. For example, do you want to shop along the way, check out historic buildings or gaze at wildlife?
Also included are icons showing which routes are wheelchair accessible, as well as caveats about routes which are very hilly or potentially muddy.
“Walk Redmond” brochures are available at Redmond City Hall, 15670 NE 85th St.; the Redmond Senior Center, 8703 160th Ave. NE; and at the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, 16600 NE 80th St.
For more information, call the city’s Parks and Recreation department at (425) 556-2311 or e-mail redmondparks@redmond.gov.
If you choose to walk in a commercial area of Redmond, look for a Redmond business directory and discount information at www.thinkredmond.com.

Last December, we told you about a valiant effort to make Redmond’s live music scene more vibrant:
http://www.pnwlocalnews.com/east_king/red/news/36391054.html
In this economy, most of us have cut way back on entertainment, but the good news is that the venues we told you about in late 2008 are still standing — and yes, still serving up some great live music with either no cover or a modest cover charge.
Not all have professional bands on a nightly basis. Sometimes there’s an open mic, a community drum circle or other diversion.
But in this season of good will, getting out of your house, mingling with neighbors and supporting the local talent is a way to strike back against the pervasive doom and gloom.
Keep those good vibrations happening.

The Redmond Regional Library’s 2009 “One Book, One Redmond” program is coming to a dramatic conclusion — culminating with an author appearance by Timothy Egan at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3.
Librarian Andy McClung urges, “Arrive early to get good seats!”
Egan will answer questions about his award-winning book “The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived The Great American Dust Bowl.”
If you’ve not yet read the book, a limited number of copies are available for check-out at the Redmond Library, 15990 NE 85th St.
Or you can pick up a coupon at the library, for a 20 percent discount on the book purchase, redeemable at Borders at Redmond Town Center.
In conjunction with the “One Book, One Redmond” program, there are two more free movie screenings at the library, related to the themes of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression.
This Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m., the movie is “Sullivan’s Travels.”
The following Sunday, Nov. 29 at 2 p.m., it’s “Black Blizzard,” featuring Egan.
Three more book discussions are still to come:
Tomorrow night (Nov. 19) at 7 p.m., the discussion is at the library.
At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, it’s in the City Hall lobby — with coffee and snacks! That’s at 15670 NE 85th St.
Last but not least, another book discussion will happen at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30 at the Redmond Senior Center, 8703 160th Ave. NE.
In other King County Library System news, the Kirkland branch is re-opening on Saturday, Dec. 5.
The list of RedmondLights activities is huge. Expect a wide variety of FREE entertainment throughout downtown Redmond from 3-9 p.m.
• At Redmond City Hall, you’ll find kids’ activities, Santa’s arrival, the tree lighting ceremony and entertainment by Russian folk dancers, a Latin jazz ensemble, the Holy Names Academy Girls Choir and Microsoft Orchestra Brass Ensemble.
• The Redmond Senior Center will feature a Bollywood orchestra.
• The Sammamish River Trail (behind City Hall) will be lined with luminaries and musical groups from Redmond United Methodist Church and more.
• NOTE: To participate in the sleigh bells chorus, stop by participating Redmond Town Center retailers starting Nov. 27 to pick up your free sleigh bells. Supplies are limited.
• Food and beverage samples at RedmondLights will be provided by local businesses including REI, Thai Ginger, Mehfil Indian Cuisine, Fairwinds Red Sky Restaurant and Spazzo Italian Grill and Wine Bar. Plus, a new beer and wine garden will be staffed by Black Raven Brewery.

Redmond’s Old Fire House Teen Center is accepting applications and resumes from students who are interested in learning about music event production and management, in conjunction with the annual Classic Rockathon.
The Classic Rockathon is a “Battle of the Bands” in which young musicians perform songs originally recorded between the early 1950s and about 1990 — and compete for fabulous prizes such as musical gear and recording time.
That’s right, kids. “Hey-Ya!” is not a classic rock song. But I digress.
Chris Cullen, program coordinator at the Old Fire House said interested students can get great hands-on experience in the music and media fields — and can apply that experience to culminating projects at school and/or other service requirements. It’s the kind of experience that can fatten up a college or job application, too. (You’ll learn marketing and public relations skills that will serve you well in many other arenas.)
For those students who are see themselves as philanthropists, last year’s Rockathon raised more than $1,500 for educational programs at the Old Fire House. Though the Old Fire House is well-known as an all-ages music venue, there are many activities to serve local teens with other interests, too. For instance, there are art and photography classes, skateboarding and martial arts training, college preparation seminars and so on.
Five students will be chosen from the pool of applicants for this opportunity. If you want to be one of them, you must submit an application and prepare to be interviewed by Chris Cullen, who is a super-nice guy.
Oh — and you must be between the ages of 15 and 19 to apply.
For more information, call (425) 556-2341 or e-mail ccullen@redmond.gov.
The Old Fire House is located at 16510 NE 79th St. in downtown Redmond and the Rockathon planning and production process will begin in early 2010. Good luck!
